Texas Solar Incentives
The Lone Star State is widely considered a renewable energy leader for its numerous solar incentives and initiatives designed to make green technologies more accessible and affordable, including:
Texas Solar Property Tax Exemption
Depending on where you live, Texas offers a property tax exemption for residential solar installations, which means the added value to your home from a solar system will not increase your property tax.
Texas Solar Buybacks
Many Texas electric providers and co-ops offer solar buyback programs, which allow you to get credits or compensation for extra electricity produced by your solar panels and sent back to the grid.
Solar Rebates & Incentives in Texas
Some Texas electric providers and co-ops provide additional solar rebates or incentives to further reduce the cost of installing solar panels. Your local solar dealer will know if you qualify.
Solar Energy Sales Tax Exemption
Texas provides a state sales tax exemption on the purchase of solar energy equipment, reducing the overall cost of going solar.
Solar Rights in Texas
Texas has laws in place to protect homeowners’ rights to install solar panels on their properties, ensuring HOAs and local ordinances do not unreasonably restrict solar installations.
The availability and specifics of these incentives can change, and there might be additional programs introduced in the future. Sunnova does not provide tax advice, so before making any decisions, it's advisable to reach out to your tax advisor or the state government's official websites for the most up-to-date information on home solar incentives in Texas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Since your home’s solar system will be tied to your Texas electric provider (grid-tied), if you don’t have a battery storage system, your solar will not work during a power outage. You won’t be able to make or use solar energy while the grid is down. To have electricity during a Texas power outage, you’ll need a solar + battery storage system.*
Solar panels are extremely durable and built to withstand the elements. While your system won’t typically need regular maintenance, your responsibilities will include:
- Trim any trees around your system that may block the sun from reaching your solar panels.
- Check that there’s no accumulation of leaves, debris, snow or critters under the solar panels.
- Depending on where you are in Texas, you may need to spray your solar panels with a garden hose to wash off built-up dust and dirt. You can do this while standing on the ground – we strongly advise against you climbing on your roof for any reason.
Yes, when you first fill out your application, Sunnova will perform a soft credit check to help verify your identity and determine your eligibility for a Texas solar energy plan. This soft inquiry won’t impact your credit score. However, if you’re applying for a solar loan, your soft inquiry will convert to a hard inquiry within 30 days of the sale.
You can monitor your Texas solar panel production in your MySunnova customer portal. Keep in mind that your production data is delayed approximately 24 hours. In addition, as part of your Sunnova solar energy plan, we’ll proactively monitor your system 24/7 and alert you to any issues as necessary.
